Out of the Shadow

Bruce Farm

2018 GOHBA Housing Design Award Finalist

A quiet oasis situated on a cul-de-sac within the City, has offered tranquility and reprieve from the hustle & bustle a mere few meters away, but the heart of the home required polishing up!

The existing kitchen was practical but not functional: mis-used space, cramped cabinets, lack of storage and above all, natural light.  The kitchen had served the family well while their children were growing up but the kitchen had exceeded it’s lifecycle.

The removal of the wall between kitchen and dining room creates a sense of greater space and invites natural light to flood in from both rooms.  A new kitchen window & full glass door draw in the natural light that fills the rooms.  The entire space is now more airy and inviting to just ‘hang-out’ in while meals are being prepared and enjoyed with family & friends.

Even with the removal of the wall section,  the kitchen design has increased functional work space and greater storage. The homeowners no longer store kitchen goods in other rooms. Preparing meals is now a social interaction instead of a cloistered affair hidden within the original kitchen.

Classic, crisp lines define the cabinetry, trim and space. The white coloured cabinets are a perfect transition from the original cabinetry. The new cabinetry combined with the light gray coloured backsplash tiles – have achieved an understated elegance to the home. The homeowners are free to add splashes of colour without dating their home !

The heart of the home has been restored to it’s proper function:    a  jewel  that  shines  for the homeowners !
