Highly textured materials are matte in finish, which enhances their natural character and textures and are then contrasted with highly reflective finishes such as the polished kitchen backsplash and counter tops. The polished materials assist in tying the natural environment into the house, with the reflection of a trees visible in the kitchen backsplash and in the glass shower enclosure.
The stairs are a key feature of form & function: contouring the courtyard and increasing natural light into the centre of the house. These elements are linked throughout the home – facilitating transitions between interior and exterior seamless. This home is the result of taking a constrained site and using innovative solutions to craft a custom home that is spacious and bathed in natural light. It is an expression of thoughtful modernity, made evident in the coordinated selection of interior finishes and enhanced by the detailing and articulation of the exterior materials.
The entrance invites you into an unobstructed view of the living space with large expanses of glass in the living room. Double doors define the main floor office that provides the workspace at home. The stairs bathe the centre of the home in natural light. The aviation cable railing is fanciful play on the airiness of the stairwell. The kitchen, dining & family room flow seamlessly and are defined only by the clients’ imagination.
Challenges to construct included a narrow lot and extremely close proximity to the adjoining home. The adjoining home is from the 1800s and presented it’s own set of structural issues. The in-floor radiant heat throughout the home offers unsurpassed comfort throughout the heating season. Set up in multiple zones, the clients control the energy use according to their requirements. This system maintains near perfect ambient temperature and enjoyment for the clients.
